Can the Toma-Top be installed on an existing yacht?
Toma-Top was originally developed as an aftermarket solution and has been installed on hundreds of yachts in Japan. This extensive experience across a wide range of yacht brands and models allows us to evaluate your vessel and recommend the most appropriate installation solution for your specific application.
See Toma-Top installations on a variety of flybridge yachts in our Project Gallery.
Does installing a Toma-Top affect my yacht's stability or center of gravity?
Installing a Toma-Top adds weight to the flybridge, approximately that of two adults, with total installed weight varying by model. On yachts 28 feet and larger, Toma-Top installations have not demonstrated a significant impact on vessel handling or stability when properly installed.
Toma-Top has also been selected as an official factory option by leading Japanese boat manufacturers, including Yamaha, Toyota, and Yanmar, providing further validation of the system’s suitability for marine applications.
Ordering & Installation
What is the lead time for a Toma-Top?
The typical Toma-Top lead time is approximately 16 weeks from order to delivery. This includes manufacturing for the selected model and shipping from the Toma-Top factory in Japan to the local boatyard for installation.
What is needed for the installation of the Toma-Top?
Installation requires accurate measurements and proper preparation of your yacht. Your Toma-Top sales rep will coordinate with your certified installation partner to ensure a smooth installation process.
Specifications & Customization
What is the standard operating voltage of the Toma-Top?
Toma-Top operates on either 12V or 24V DC power.
How much does the Toma-Top weigh?
Toma-Top weight varies by model. The total installed weight, including the pipe stanchions, is approximately 140 kg (309 lbs) for the 2200 mm model and 230 kg (507 lbs) for the 2500 mm model.
The FRP hardtop itself weighs approximately 102 kg (225 lbs) for the 2200 mm model and 180 kg (397 lbs) for the 2500 mm model.
These weights do not include optional equipment or accessories such as radar, lighting, antennas, or other electronics.
What materials are used for the stanchions and other metal components?
Toma-Top uses marine-grade stainless steel for its stanchions and structural metal components. Pipe diameter and wall thickness are engineered according to the specific Toma-Top model to provide the appropriate strength, structural integrity, and performance for each application.
Can the Toma-Top be painted to match the color of my yacht?
Yes, the Toma-Top can be painted to match the color of your yacht for a seamless and customized look.
Can radar, VHF antennas, Starlink or spotlights be mounted on a Toma-Top?
Yes. The Toma-Top can accommodate equipment such as radar, VHF antennas, Starlink, and spotlights. For units sold in the United States, mounting reinforcements are available and are customized according to the specific equipment and installation requirements.
Because custom reinforcement layouts require modifications during the FRP layup process, mounting provisions must be identified when specifying your Toma-Top. Custom provisions for radar, Starlink, antennas, or spotlights may increase manufacturing lead time.
Is interior lighting available to be installed in my Toma-Top?
Yes, interior LED lighting can be installed as an option at the time of installation. Your sales representative can provide details on specific lighting options and configurations.
Can Isinglass be added to enclose the sides of the Toma-Top for a fully enclosed flybridge?
Yes, Isinglass can be added to create a fully enclosed flybridge. While this is not a factory-provided feature, it can be added during installation.
Are there reinforced spots for exterior lighting (running/anchor lights) on the Toma-Top?
Yes, Toma-Top units are designed to support running and anchor lighting.
Comfort & Onboard Experience
Can a Toma-Top help reduce noise on the flybridge?
Yes. Unlike traditional Bimini tops and canvas enclosures that can flap, vibrate or rattle, the Toma-Top is securely mounted to the vessel’s structure, creating a more solid and stable installation. The rigid hardtop and retractable windshield reduce the movement and associated noise common with canvas systems, contributing to a quieter, more comfortable flybridge experience while underway.
Learn more about how Toma-Top can enhance flybridge comfort and usability.
Can a Toma-Top help keep my flybridge cooler?
Yes. The Toma-Top’s white hardtop provides permanent shade and reduces direct solar exposure, helping create a more comfortable flybridge environment.
For yachts equipped with flybridge air conditioning, the Toma-Top can also form part of a fully enclosed flybridge configuration when combined with Isinglass or another marine enclosure system, helping contain conditioned air more effectively.

Maintenance, Service & Warranty
How should I maintain my Toma-Top to ensure durability?
Regular cleaning with mild soap and water is recommended to keep your Toma-Top in optimal condition. Avoid abrasive cleaners that can damage the surface. For the retractable windshield, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for lubrication and maintenance.
How durable is the polycarbonate windshield?
The Toma-Top windshield is made from durable, hard-coated polycarbonate designed to resist scratching during normal cleaning and everyday use in marine environments. Under normal conditions, its expected service life is approximately four to seven years, depending on UV exposure, operating conditions, and care. If the windshield becomes worn or damaged over time, the polycarbonate panel can be replaced independently without replacing the entire Toma-Top system.
Can the Toma-Top windshield be replaced?
Yes. If the hard-coated polycarbonate windshield becomes worn or damaged, the windshield panel can be replaced independently without replacing the entire Toma-Top system
What should I do if the retractable windshield stops moving?
First, listen to determine whether the motor is operating.
- If you do not hear the motor, check the boat’s circuit breaker to make sure it has not tripped.
- If the circuit breaker is on but the windshield still does not operate, the Toma-Top’s overcurrent protection device may have been triggered. Remove the rubber cap on the side of the drive unit and press the reset switch.
- If the motor overheats, the thermal protection system may activate at approximately 80°C (176°F). Allow the drive unit to cool before operating the windshield again.
If the windshield still does not operate after these steps, contact your Toma-Top representative or authorized service representative for assistance.
What warranty is provided with the Toma-Top?
The Toma-Top unit itself (hardtop and retractable windshield mechanism) is covered by a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty. Stanchions and installation are covered by a 1-year workmanship warranty provided by the installer. Additional terms, conditions and exclusions may apply.
